COLLEGE FANTASY BASKETBALL CONTEST

As some of you readers might know, I am a fan of fantasy sports. I have written the fantasy basketball section for the Sporting News’ Pro Basketball Yearbook and for Fantasy Football Weekly, CDM Fantasy Challenge and other fantasy magazines. I am planning on having a fantasy college basketball contest available for readers of College Basketball News. The contest would allow owners to battle against each other as they try to pick the best possible teams made up of players from the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10, Conference USA and SEC. The rules are very simple and you can win a first place prize of $2,500. For a look at how the game would run, click the link. The contest starts in January during conference play, but sign-ups begin today.

JAYHAWK SHOOTOUT INFORMATION

I will be at the Jayhawk Shootout this weekend checking out the top Kansas JC talent. Six of the players have already signed with Division I schools. 6-2 Bobby Carter of Cloud County signed with Western Illinois; Butler’s 5-11 Jerome Holman inked with Wichita State and 6-8 James Peters signed with UNLV; 5-11 point guard Daniel Towns of Labette signed with Georgia State; 6-7 Dontaz Dean of Seward also signed with Georgia State and 6-7 Kebrell Brown from Dodge City inked with Oregon State.

There are plenty of talent unsigned sophomores and freshman to watch as well. 6-10 freshman Robert Whaley of Barton County signed with Missouri, but later went to trial for rape. The case was ruled a mistrial and he is currently playing for the number three team in the country.

Another interesting freshman to watch is Lee Benson of Brown Mackie. The 6-11 freshman spent eight years in prison. He is averaging 28.1 points and 14.6 rebounds per game and has already attracted the attention of NBA scouts. He was recent the subject of a story in the Wichita Eagle “Benson making most of new life.”

Here is a schedule of the games. There will be a total of twenty men’s and twenty women’s games played over the three days.

CHECK OUT THE MORGAN WOOTTEN INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND ON BROADCASTMONSTERS.COM

Defending national champion Oak Hill Academy will make its second appearance all-time in the sixth annual Morgan Wootten Invitational (formerly the DeMatha Invitational) as one of six teams battling in the high school basketball season's tip-off tournament at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House on Saturday, December 1, 2001 beginning at 3:30 p.m.  Four different states will be represented and five consensus Top 25 prospects will be showcased in the three-game benefit for the American Liver Foundation. The games can be heard on the internet at http://www.broadcastmonsters.com/ASX/morganwootten.asx.

Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill Academy, who finished No. 1 in last season's USA Today Top 25 poll and are #2 in the preseason poll, will play against Massachusetts powerhouse Tabor Academy (Marion, Mass.) in the nightcap.  The Warriors finished 33-0 last season. They lost their three top players, but are still loaded with College Basketball News’ number two senior Carmelo Anthony, who signed with Syracuse and #10 Sani Ibrahim, who is considering the NBA draft. They also have #42 6-2 point guard Chadd Moore, who inked to Cincinnati, #75 6-1 point guard Justin Gray, who signed with Wake Forest, 6-7 small forward Antywane Robinson (Temple), Ian Johnson (Davidson), 6-3 Eric Wilkins (Miami of Florida) and 6-5 Richard Joyce (Wake Forest).  Tabor, which has played in the New England prep championship game in each of the past five years, features 6-9 power forward Torin Francis (Notre Dame).

The second game of the evening, the Battle of the Big Men, pits DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.), the defending city champions, against two-time defending New York state champion Amityville High School. Power forwards Travis Garrison of DeMatha and Jason Fraser of Amityville are two of the top players in the region. Garrison signed with Maryland and Fraser inked with Villanova.

The opening game of the event features many of the top underclassmen.  Bishop O'Connell High School (Arlington, Va.) is led by 6-9 sophomore center Brian Johnson, while Georgetown Preparatory School (Bethesda, Md.), starts two 6-10 prospects, including 14-year-old All-America camp attendee Roy Hibbert. Hibbert played at the U.S. Developmental Festival in June and has verbally committed to Georgetown.

Coach Morgan Wootten is in his 46th year as the head coach at DeMatha and he has amassed over 1,200 career wins. He has won the most games in high school basketball and is the first basketball coach at any level, high school, college or pro, to reach 1,200 wins. Coach Wootten has recorded five national championships and has won 33 conference titles. He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in October of 2000.

The Morgan Wootten Invitational will benefit the American Liver Foundation's Washington DC Chapter.  The ALF is the leading voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing, treating and curing hepatitis and other liver diseases through research and education.  Coach Wootten created the Invitational to raise awareness for organ donation after he received a life-saving liver transplant in 1996.

Advance tickets are $10 for all three games, while premium seats are only $25.  Please call Brett Olson in the Morgan Wootten Invitational offices at 301-762-7100 to reserve your tickets today.

THIS WEEK IN JC HOOPS PART II

Each week, I’ll look at the top ten JC teams in the NJCAA poll with recaps of last week’s games and previews of their upcoming games. We will look at the teams 6-10 today. The junior college information will soon be available to subscribers only, so remember to sign-up soon.

#1 Indian Hills lost to Three Rivers (MO) CC 74-70 on Wednesday, so there could be some changes in the poll next week.

A very special thanks to Michael L. Johnson and his Juco Classic News Service, which provides in-depth coverage of NJCAA Division men’s basketball with twice-weekly email updates of what’s happening around the country.  For further information, check out his web site at www.jucoclassic.com. It is a must-read for any JC coaches, writers or fans.

#6 Okaloosa-Walton Community College moved up six posts as they remained undefeated in nine games with
an 82-75 road win over Bevill State/Sumiton (5-2) Wednesday, defeating the Bears for the second time. Okaloosa-Walton led by just one point at halftime, but a 15-3 run in the first five minutes of the final period, put the Raiders ahead for good. 6-9 Mississippi State signee Kei Madison had 20 points and twelve rebounds. 6-0 sophomore Zavier Mathis also scored 20 points and hit five three-pointers in the second half. 6-5 freshman Ronell Taylor had 15 points and Mississippi State signee Brandon Vincent had 13 caroms.

They previously defeated Atlanta Tech (1-6) 93-52 in their own Comfort Inn Classic. 6-3 freshman Mario Jointer scored 24 of his 28 points in the first half. Jointer, who originally signed with Mississippi, made eight of twelve three-pointers. Madison added 18 points and nine rebounds and Ronell Taylor made three three-pointers for twelve points. Twin brother Donell Taylor had ten points and eight rebounds and Vincent added ten points and eight rebounds.

They won the championship game with a 103-68 victory over South Georgia Tech (4-5). Ronell Taylor had 22 points. Mathis and 6-6 freshman Michael Phillips scored 15 points each. Madison finished with 14 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots and Jointer added 13 points.

The Raiders hosted the Raider Classic Friday and Saturday and play at Jefferson Davis Tuesday. The Raiders have seven double figure scorers, led by Mathis with 16.3 points per game and Madison, who is averaging 16 points and 11.5 rebounds per contest.

#7 Dixie State College of Utah dropped five spots as they fell from the number two spot after their first loss of the season.

They rebounded from its first loss of the season by defeating Citrus College 88-60 to give the Rebels a third place finish in the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Citrus College. Jorsua Chambers, with 6-4 sophomore Al Williams sitting out with a bad ankle, stepped in and led DSC with 19 points. 6-1 sophomore Rod Prater scored 15 points and 6-6 freshman Terren Harbut added 12. All-American candidate Jaime Lloreda was double-teamed throughout the game and held to seven points.

The Rebels’ poor free throw shooting cost them as the lost their first game of the year 78-75 to Riverside City College in the semifinals of the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Citrus College. The Rebels hit just 14 of 33 from the charity stripe.  Dixie State led 39-38 at the half, went on a 7-0 run to open the second half and led by as many as 14. However, DSC coach Jeff Kidder said his starters looked tired so he put in his reserves. Those subs allowed Riverside to get back in the game. The teams were tied at 67 with 2:42 left, but key turnovers led to Riverside taking a 74-68 lead with 58 seconds left, and Dixie State could never come back. Rod Prater led the Rebels with 27, while Lloreda scored 18 and Woodberry contributed 14. Woodberry played at Portland two years ago and redshirted last season at Glendale CC, Riverside was led by Fresno State signee Omar Weaver, who scored 34 points.

The Dixie State started the week with a 84-73 win over Compton in the quarterfinals of the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Citrus Community College. The Rebels held a 42-34 lead at the half, but Compton opened the second half with a 21-4 run that saw Dixie drop behind 55-46. Kevin Woodberry hit back-to-back three-pointers to break a 68-68 tie to make the score 74-68. Woodberry finished with 13 points. Prater led the team with 25 and Lloreda scored 23.

Dixie State will take next week off and resume its schedule on Dec. 7 with a Scenic West Athletic Conference tilt against Utah Valley State College. Lloreda is averaging 21.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game and Prater is averaging 20.4 points. Prater averaged 21 points per game at Grayson (TX) CC last season, but left for personal reasons.

#8 Wabash Valley College dropped three spots after their first loss of the year, losing to Vincennes 92-83. Wabash Valley led 57-33 at halftime, but the Trailblazers went on a 26-6 run to cut the lead, and had closed to four points. 6-7 Vincennes forward Delonte Holland made one of two free shots with 7:09 remaining to tie the score at 70-70. The Trailblazers outscored Wabash Valley 49-13 over the first 17:30 of the final period. They shot 18 of 27 from the field (66.7%), while Wabash made just seven of 38 (18.4%). The Trailblazers dominated the boards in the second half, grabbing a 31-9 carom edge. VU hit 30 of 36 free throws (83.3%) while the Warriors converted only half of their attempts (14/28). 6-7 sophomore Larry Brown scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half and he added twelve rebounds. NJCAA Tournament MVP Antwain Barbour scored 16 of 18 points in the second half. 6-5 freshman Quinnel Brown had 17 points and 6-4 sophomore Tony Allen chipped in ten points. Allen was the Jayhawk Conference Western Division Freshman of the Year last season at Butler (KS) CC.

Wabash Valley bounced back from its first loss of the season defeating the Spaulding JV 90-62 in its own Old National Tournament. 6-6 sophomore Herman Davis led all scorers with 20 points and Brown added 17. Allen finished with 16 points and 6-9 sophomore Ramon Sendar had ten points and eleven rebounds.

Wabash Valley bested the Tornatta All Stars 99-70 as Brown had 15 points. 6-1 sophomore Jon Hollingsworth, had twelve points and five assists. Davis, 6-3 sophomore C.J. Hill and Sendar had ten points each.

Wabash Valley finished 36-1 last season and won their first NJCAA Championship. Head coach Jay Spoonhour left to become an assistant under his dad, Charlie, at UNLV. Mark Nelson left Cowley County (KS) CC to take over the program, giving the Warriors their third head coach in as many years. They are led by NJCAA Tournament MVP Antwain Barbour. He scored 92 points in the four tournament games, third best. Barbour was the only JC player invited to the U.S. Trials in Colorado Springs in June and he made the U.S. national team. Barbour recently committed to Kentucky, but there has been some talk of him exploring the NBA Draft. He will take a bigger scoring and leadership load with the loss of All-American Darren Tarver (who signed with George Mason), Hiram Fuller (Fresno State), Omari Westley (transferred to Barton County (KS) CC) and Chaz Briggs (West Virginia).

#9 Southwest Missouri State University -West Plains stayed at the same spot with two wins after their first loss of the season to Wabash Valley 96-84 on November 17th. They defeated Northeast Mississippi (3-3) 93-82 in the Three Rivers Hardees/Parc Thanksgiving Tournament as 6-5 freshman Jermaine Blackburn and 6-8 Marques Lewis each scored a career-high 17 points for the Grizzlies. Lewis added ten rebounds. 6-6 freshman David Stephens had 15 points and 6-2 redshirt freshman Quiande Moore added 14 points, six assists and four steals. 5-10 sophomore Tevoris Thompson had 13 points. JC All-American Qyntel Woods led Northeast Mississippi with 26 points and twelve rebounds.

SMSU/West Plains improved to 9-1 with a 107-82 victory over Bossier Parish (5-5) in the final night of the Three Rivers Hardees/Parc Thanksgiving Tournament.  Thompson made six three-pointers and finished with 31 points. Moore added four three-pointers in a twenty-point effort and Lewis added 19 points and eight rebounds. 6-0 sophomore Brandon Temple had twelve assists and Stephens added eleven points.

Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains finished 27-5 last season, but must replace leading scorer Jason Detrick, who signed with Oklahoma. They face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on the road Saturday. Thompson is leading the Grizzlies with 19.2 points per game. Moore is averaging 11.9 points and Temple is contributing 11.7 points and 6.3 assists per contests.

#10 Southern Union State Community College moved up seven spots as they remained unbeaten. They defeated Southwest Tennessee (4-4) 114-102. 6-1 sophomore Earl Bullock scored 34 points and Western Michigan signee Bobbi Madison had 27. 6-7 sophomore Grady Reynolds finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds and 6-4 sophomore Terrence Hill added 14. 6-0 sophomore guard Terrell Turner contributed with eleven points and seven assists. 6-6 sophomore Cortez Stigger of Southwest Tennessee led all scorers with 43 points.
